How to Use This Search Tool
Facebook Search Tool is a training aid for power searchers. It replicates Search URLs which relay instructions to the search engine using Graph Search and Keyword Search queries.
The author's Facebook Search book series provides a detailed background on the search process. It includes queries and structured tutorials that teach users to relay complex requests without the assistance of the tool.
It's the most comprehensive guide available for advanced search.
Step 1: Find People, Places & Pages
Every search has a starting point, whether it is a Name, Place, or Topic. The People tab and Keyword Search are a good starting point for most general queries. Once you've identified a specific interest, begin your probes through another tab like Profile, Place, or Page. You'll get the most specific results using Graph Search and the ID assigned to your subject. TIP: Language
Graph Search was only released in English language. Because of this, your Facebook account must be set to
English, too.
Step 2: Find IDs for your search
Everything on Facebook has an ID whether it's a Profile, Photo, or Event. Facebook's database makes connections through the IDs assigned to each. Here are some tips for finding them. Photos:Double click (or right click) the subject's Profile Photo or Cover Image to display the URL. The UserID or PageID is the third set of numbers in the URL following the letter a (before the slash /). For some uploads, the ID is next to pb or rpp (Photos) or vb (Videos). Source Code: IDs are also found in the HTML. Search the following terms within the HTML of the subject's timeline.
HTML search terms
Profile
Page
Place
Group
Event
Apps
fb://
fb://
/places-in/
fb://
URL=/events/
fb://
"uid:"
"uid:"
"uid:"
"uid:"
(if a page)
Bookmarks: The javascript Get FBIDbookmark will search the source code for you to locate the ID in an Android or fb:// URL. To add it, Select and Drag the bookmark to your browser toolbar. Select it while browsing a subject's timeline to launch the HTML search. Facebook caches pages, so you may need to reload the browser to refresh the bookmark and the source code between queries. TIP: Search from a Sidebar
This tool was designed to operate as a sidebar bookmark in a Firefox browser. The sidebar opens search results without leaving the Tool.
Firefox Sidebar Bookmark
To set this up select "Bookmarks" and "Bookmark This Page" in the Firefox menu. Then, right click on your new bookmark, select "Properties," and check "Load this bookmark in the sidebar." Search results will now open in new tabs next to the Facebook Search Tool.
Step 3: Build Search URLs
Objects and Connections
Facebook is a database of Objects like Profile, Photos, and Events. Each Object has an index detailing its connections like Tags and Uploads. Search URLs provide Facebook's search engine with everything it needs to find and process the connections in the index.
With Graph Search, the query identifies the Object and the type of connection. An ID is attached to the query to define the specific Object involved in the connection, i.e. Photos by Mark.
In Keyword Search, the queries target Objects,as a group. The probes are conducted with text instead of IDs to generate general results, i.e. Photos about "desk."
See the Facebook Search Part I book for more details on how Facebook indexes, retrieves, and processes search requests.
Creating Search URLs
While preparing or troubleshooting a Search URL try visualizing it as a Venn Diagram.
These diagrams represent data in sets. Search URLs provide instructions to the search engine that often mimic these visualizations. They task the search engine to find Objects and then selectively join or filter the data to return a specific result.
See the Facebook Search book for a comprehenisve list of queries and best practices for organizing the Search URL.
